Daniel Funke / Experience

Experience

Design keeps changing – and my role has changed with it. I started out in print and multimedia design. Digital brand experiences, interfaces and art direction came later. Today, my work is just as much about people, systems and quality. What has stayed the same is the ambition to turn good ideas into design that works and lasts.

2009 – present

Nintendo of Europe

Supervisor Online Design

Team & quality

My role at Nintendo has changed significantly over the years. Alongside design came increasing responsibility for the team and for the quality of what we create together. I provide direction and feedback, allocate tasks and support designers in their development. Recruiting and supporting junior talent are also part of my role. For a period, this also included responsibility for European Artwork & Design.

Design & brand

Nintendo operates across many markets, languages and digital touchpoints in Europe. Design therefore needs to retain its character while also being scalable. That balance shapes my work, from UX/UI and information architecture to templates and design standards.

Systems & processes

Good design is not enough if it cannot be applied reliably. That is why I develop reusable templates, design and production structures, and work with IT and process management on asset and workflow processes. The aim is to create solutions that safeguard quality and make day-to-day work easier.

Coordination & collaboration

Not every brief arrives as a fully defined task. Often, the work starts with understanding the requirements, clarifying open questions and turning them into a clear design task. This involves working with different departments, European markets and external partners.

2009

Mood! Communication

Art Director

My time at Mood! was brief. The focus was on digital communication and design solutions for online applications. In August 2009, I joined Nintendo of Europe.

2006 – 2009

SinnerSchrader

Art Director

At SinnerSchrader, my work increasingly moved from design towards art direction. Alongside digital brand experiences, interactive applications and online marketing, concept presentations, workshops and direct client contact were part of everyday work. New business and collaboration across multiple locations also broadened my understanding of how an idea becomes a convincing project.

2003 – 2006

People-Interactive

Senior Web Designer

At People-Interactive, my focus was on digital brand and interface solutions. Screen design, GUI and interactive applications were fields undergoing enormous technical and creative change at the time. My work ranged from the initial concept through visual development and art direction.

2002 – 2003

Elephant Seven

Designer

At Elephant Seven, my role became broader. Alongside digital creative concepts and art direction, I took on responsibility for the creative work and coordinated projects across multiple locations. I also played a significant part in building the Frankfurt office and helped shape internal workflows and structures.

2001 – 2002

limeXL

Designer

At limeXL, I mainly worked on digital brand and communication solutions. The focus was on web and interface design, complemented by art direction responsibilities.

2000 – 2001

WOB / WOB.Interactive

Art Director

At WOB, print and digital increasingly came together in my work. I developed creative and navigation concepts as well as screen designs, while also contributing to the development of WOB.Interactive’s corporate design. Working across different media shaped my approach from an early stage.

1998 – 2000

Moonlight Dancer

Print & Multimedia Designer

This is where my work was still much closer to traditional design. I worked on print and multimedia communication while digital applications were becoming an increasingly important part of brand communication.
